The Presence of Crows
Following the death of my cat, I became aware of the crows visiting my neighborhood each morning. I watched great flocks fly eastward at dawn and westward at dusk, their blackness and mythos captivating my attention during this time of grieving. Through painting and drawing, I explore the symbolic meaning of these creatures as intermediaries between the worlds of life and death. In my work crows represent the relationship between the mundane and the mythological - a bridge connecting the natural world with the realm of the sacred.
These mixed media paintings on paper begin as monoprints. This process allows me to work freely and intuitively to create a base layer to build the painting a upon. The iconic images of crows are taken from my visual journal and are transferred to the print using etching inks. Additional color and line are applied using acrylic glazes and water soluble crayon.
